The Brand: Halo (or Halocigs): Who are they?

Halo produces Subzero e liquid in its state of the art, 100,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Florida:

• The company is one of the largest, most well-known and highly trusted e liquid producers in the world.
• It has been around since right near the dawn of vaping.
• Halo specialises in premium top-quality tobacco and menthol flavoured e liquids.
• Subzero is their #1 seller among the menthol blends. 

Halo has a rather ambitious mission statement - which we find quite inspiring:

Why is Subzero the #1 Menthol E Liquid? 

First question in relation to this is “What is it about the flavour that is so good?”

Here’s how Halo themselves describe Subzero’s flavour:

"It doesn’t get any more menthol than SubZero. With three times the cool mint effect of our other menthol E-liquid flavours, SubZero offers excellent vapour production and an icy, yet satisfying finish. Perfect as an all-day vape, or for mixing into your other favourite E-liquids."

Halo’s emphasis on ‘three times’ the cool mint effect may make it sound more icy than it is. Subzero is a strong sweet menthol, and its flavour is super-consistent every time, but it is not overwhelming - and I did find smoking super-strong ‘ice’ menthol cigarettes too much back when I smoked. Instead it is a slightly-sweet, but very clean tasting menthol.

My main impression is how good it is as an all day vape. In testing other menthols I often grow sick of them fairly quickly. Many are too strong and the mint/ ice becomes overwhelming. Some, while tasting good initially, tend to fade and become quite meh after a few hours in - as if my tastebuds grow accustomed to the flavour and stop experiencing it. Subzero on the other hand, keeps on delivering the same slightly sweet crisp menthol all day. (If you are new to vaping this is an important consideration - oftentimes flavours become washed out and you need to rotate juices flavours to give your tastebuds a break).

So perhaps it is the consistency of Subzero that really makes it a clear #1 menthol e liquid.

Halo's Quality Control Effect

Why is Subzero such a consistently good menthol eliquid? How do they make it so consistent?

The first answer to this question is probably in the way they build/ design flavours in the first place. Halo doesn’t release new juices in giant numbers of new flavours all at the same time. They tend to spend a long time perfecting just one new juice flavour and then release it. That has been their approach since the early days of having very few flavours. (So in keeping with this it took them a long time to release their nic salts versions of Subzero and Tribeca - see the section on Subzero nic salts below - and again they got it right!). 

Which brings me to my next point - as they are a large enough/ smart enough company to be able to afford to take to their time with juice flavour design the same style of thinking goes in to their quality control procedures. And as far as consistency of each and every bottle goes that is the likely key factor.

Here is the Halo quality control statement:

“Halo takes manufacturing safety very seriously, and offers some unprecedented Quality Control procedures including born-on dating and lot number tracking. We use FEMA GRAS/USP ingredients in all e-liquid, and develop all of our Nicotine Base to Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP).”

Aside from the experienced consistency of fine flavour it is clear when you look at the product itself that the quality is superb.

Glass is the best container for e liquid (yes, plastic bottles are lower cost and easier to ship around but plastic does leak particles in to fluids - and is therefore not the best container to use for liquids that will end up in, or near, the human body - which is why wine and other premium consumable liquids tend to come in glass bottles). 

Halo’s distinctive blue glass bottles protect the lifespan of the juice from the effects of degradation by sunlight. And the bottles feature:

• An ingredients list 
• Use by date
• Batch numbering 
• Child proof caps

Why Quality Matters

Halo’s bottles and packaging are great quality. And the eliquid is rich and consistent and smells wonderful.

But beyond this the emphasis Halo places on quality control is very reassuring. 

Through handling all aspects of the production process in-house they can source United States Pharmacopeia-grade Nicotine, Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerin and ensure flavouring are all Manufacturers Association-approved and independently lab-tested. The Halo facility’s labs and clean rooms ensure that all Halo e liquid is:

• Made in a sterile environment by trained chemists.
• Steeped properly and stored at the correct temperatures.
• Bottled and labeled accurately, so that you know exactly what you're getting anytime you pick up a bottle of Halo.

For the purposes of this review I vaped Subzero in 12mg, but this store also offers it in 3mg, 6mg & 18mg.

Recommended Devices for Vaping Halo Subzero Blue Series

I’d recommend 2 devices for vaping Halo Subzero Blue Series: (Both were used during our review of the Subzero Blue Series).

1) Innokin T18 Starter Kit - classic refillable mouth to lung vape pen. The T18 is an extremely reliable device and the menthol flavour of Subzero is excellent on it.

2) Aspire Nautilus AIO Starter Kit - refillable pod system: works for both mouth-to-lung and nic salts vaping. Choose the AIO if you want to try Subzero in both the Blue Series and the Nic Salts version.

Another Option for those that want a super-convenient way to vape Subzero is in a pre-filled pod on:

3) The Aspire Gusto Mini Starter Kit - with Halo Subzero Pods. You can vape Subzero direct to lung on the gusto - or mouth to lung - it works well both ways. This kit is also very handy when you have little time to refill your tanks/ pods - such as when travelling.

2) The New (2018 Release) Halo Subzero Ultra Salts: Nic Salts Version of Subzero X-Strength Menthol

Getting classic e juices to translate to a nicotine salts version is clearly not easy - many a fine juice has ended up distinctly average in salts.

With that in mind, I wasn’t expecting a lot when I first tried Subzero in the new ultra salts version. But the juice is fabulous - which was a reminder to me about just how much time Halo puts in to getting its juices just right before it releases them.

Subzero Nic Salts Flavour Notes

As you might expect with a salts version the sweetness of classic subzero is subdued somewhat. There is though a happy marriage of salty and sweet and the same unmistakeable Subzero flavour. 

As you spend some days vaping Subzero in salts it becomes the new Subzero normal. Recently I have been vaping only fruit-flavoured nic salts juices, but haven’t been able to put Subzero salts down for a good week now.

Overall Halo has nailed it with the ultra salts/ nic salts version.

Menthol Vapers: If you like Subzero in the blue series the nic salts version is a must try.

Menthol Smokers: If you are currently a menthol smoker looking for the current best menthol option in vaping, then Halo Subzero Ultra Salts is where we’d suggest, in 2019, you start!

Price considerations. At NZD$30 for 30mls Halo Subzero Ultra salts is a bit of a steal. Most nic salts juices on the market sit at around $35 per 30mls - and won’t have the same quality control in production. Excellent value for money.

Subzero in the nic salts version will work well with all good refillable pod-systems.

For the purposes of this review we tested Subzero Ultra Salts using two devices. As we enjoyed the combinations so much we have put together a combo deal for each device of the devices with a bottle of Halo Subzero Ultra Salts: 

1) The Justfog Minifit Pod System + Subzero Ultra Salts Deal: My preferred device for vaping Subzero salts. 

2) The Suorin Air V2 + Subzero Ultra Salts Deal: A good alternative option, with more throat hit than the Justfog.
